    vegan seven layer dip

It's only the easiest, most delicious vegan seven layer dip recipe on the planet! Imagine a dip so layered with deliciousness that every scoop makes you want to write a very excitable letter home to your mum telling her how you've fallen in love. And who can blame you?? Guacamole, sour cream, salsa and refried beans AND MORE all in one dip?? It was fate!

My first brush with this colourful marvel was at a party in California when I was 19. As an English person who had grown up with the typical array of British dips (idk, like, a cup of tea??), the sight of this Tex-Mex classic was intriguing to say the least. I remember scooping up that first bite, unsure of what to expect, and then... Wow! It was a revelation and I've never been satisfied with a SINGLE layered dip since! So, for you and you alone, here's my VEGAN version of that very seven layer dip!

🤷‍♂️ What is vegan seven layer dip?

Vegan seven layer dip is a party classic turned vegan-friendly. Traditionally, it features layers of refried beans, guacamole, salsa, and more, each contributing its own unique texture and flavour. It first appeared in Family Circle magazine back in 1981 and was simply called "Tex-Mex dip".

But in our vegan version, we swap out any animal-based stuff for plant-based goodness. Whether you’re hosting a gathering, need something fab for a potluck, or just want to munch on something lush while binge-watching your favourite series, vegan seven layer dip has got ya covered!

🫘 Vegan Seven Layer Dip Ingredients

Alright, let’s get our vegan seven layer dip ingredients ready! No need to jot down exact amounts yet (you'll find those in the full recipe card at the bottom of the page); just make sure you've got the following:

    • Vegan refried beans (spiced up with a bit of cumin and salt)
    • Ripe avocados for that creamy guacamole
    • Onions and tomatoes, chopped up for freshness
    • Lime and sea salt to enhance those zesty notes
    • Vegan sour cream (you can use my recipe or store bought)
    • Shredded vegan cheese (you can use my recipe or store bought)
    • Black olives and chives or spring onions for that final garnish

🥑 How to make perfect guacamole

The layering process for this recipe is way too easy - you don't need a walk-through for that! So instead I thought I'd give you some tips on the perfect guacamole! Guac’s gotta be good, right? It’s the heart of your vegan seven layer dip! Start with quality, ripe avocados to get that creamy, dreamy base. Here’s how to whip up the perfect guacamole:

    lime and onion

    Onion, Lime and Salt

Begin by mixing your finely chopped onion with lime juice and sea salt in a bowl. The lime slightly pickles the onion and takes away that raw sharpness, so let it sit a bit!

    avocado mashing

    Add the Mashed Avocado

Next, add your mashed avocados to the onion mix. Stir to combine. We're adding our avocado in two additions, so don't worry if you over-mash. We want the first addition to be nice and smooth.

    chunky avocado

    Add the Cubed Avocado

Now, for some texture! Fold in your cubed avocados, so every scoop gets a bit of bite.

    adding coriander

    Add the Coriander

Finish off by stirring in finely chopped coriander. This brings a fresh pop that lifts the whole dip! You're now ready to make your vegan seven layer dip!

    🔀 Ingredient substitutions

    • Refried Beans: Not a fan of cumin? Try chili powder for a bit of heat or keep it simple with just some salt.
    • Salsa: Swap tomatoes for diced red bell peppers if you’re after a slightly sweeter vibe. Or alternatively, use flame roasted salsa from the store.
    • Vegan Sour Cream: Again, you can make this recipe with my vegan sour cream or you can use store-bought. In the UK it's hard to find store-bought vegan sour cream, so I just use Oatly Creme Friache.
    • Chives/Spring Onions: Fresh coriander can be a tasty twist here, or even crispy fried shallots for some texture!
