Hey, my name is Richard Makin and I’m the guy behind School Night Vegan and All Veg Considered. I'm a recipe developer, food stylist, photographer and author of best-selling cook book Anything You Can Cook, I Can Cook Vegan. I’m also the host of food podcast Lunchbox Time Machine.
School Night Vegan began as an instagram account, back in November 2017, which documented my switch from being a life-long vegetarian to a full-time vegan. But this wasn't my first foodie rodeo!
In 2015 I founded London’s first ice cream sandwich van, and regularly hosted ice cream masterclasses, teaching the people of London to make ice cream at home!
My ice cream was a hit, being touted by Time Out, Buzzfeed, Evening Standard and Yelp. But in the end, my growing passion for vegan food led me to close up shop in 2018 and dedicate myself full-time to blogging as School Night Vegan!

Since then, my recipes have been featured in The Guardian, The Times, Stylist, Olive, Veg News and Vegan Food & Living. School Night Vegan was voted “Blog of the Year” by Vegan Food and Living in 2020 while Olives For Dinner listed School Night Vegan as one of the "Best Vegan Food Blogs To Follow". I even got listed as a vegan celebrity by Viva, which has always been a secret life goal! In 2019 I joined the team at Wicked Kitchen to help develop recipes and produce online content.
Then, slap bang in the middle of the pandemic in 2020, I secured a cook book deal with iconic publisher Bloomsbury. I locked myself in my basement kitchen with a camera and some ingredients and eventually emerged with my first ever cook book: Anything You Can Cook, I Can Cook Vegan!
My book hit the best-seller lists of multiple categories on Amazon and was listed among the best vegan cook books of 2023 by The Independent! My book was featured by The Caterer and Stylist while Green Queen called it "truly one of 2023’s best vegan cookbooks".
I now work closely with vegan travel company The Getaway Co to host vegan vacations to destinations all over the world. So far we've curated trips to Italy, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, England, France and Germany, with plenty more future trips planned!
I believe that everyone should feel free to enjoy vegan food, regardless of whether you’re skilled in the kitchen or not. It’s my dream that School Night Vegan will help you to find your own passion for experimenting with plant based cooking! Whether that's in the form of something comforting like a delicious vegan lasagna, something sweet like a vegan tiramisu, or something wholesome, like a crispy banh mi!
